How to choose the right type of pallet rack system?
Every pallet rack system has its own advantages and disadvantages.
It is advisable to employ appropriate rack system in terms of
specific storage needs. You can make decisions from the following
aspects:
♦Product Rotation
Which load method do you prefer, FIFO (first in, first out) or FILO
(first in, last out)? If the stored products are time-sensitive,
FIFO is critical for the rack system. If the potency of products is
durable and far from the expiration date, FILO is acceptable.
Common FIFO pallet rack systems: selective pallet rack, very narrow aisle pallet rack, pallet flow
rack;
Common FILO pallet rack systems: double deep pallet rack, drive-in pallet rack, push back pallet
rack.
♦Selectivity VS. Density
Selectivity is related to the variety of stored units, while
density is connected with product quantity. If you are going to
store a lot of different products, attach importance to selectivity
when choosing a pallet rack; if you plan to store a large number of
the same SKUs, put density before selectivity.

How to make sure the size of pallet racks?
After selecting a suitable type of pallet rack, it is time to
identify the size. You can proceed in the following steps:
Make sure which area in your facility is used for storage. Take
measurements of the available space. Based on the measured data,
draw a layout indicating dimensions, ceiling height and positions
of doors, walls, pillars and other obstacles.
- Determine the size and weight of pallets
Which pallet size would you plan to choose? How much would a pallet
carry? Identify the width, depth and height (load height plus
pallet height) of chosen pallets. Measure the accurate weight of
each pallet.
Beam width: When placing pallets on beams, there should be at least 10cm
clearance between upright columns and pallets, and between pallets.
For example, if the pallet width is 100cm and two pallets are loaded per bay, then the beam width should be: 10cm + 100cm + 10cm + 100cm + 10cm
= 230cm.
Beam capacity: Beam capacity hinges on pallet weight and the number of pallet loaded. For example, if pallet weight = 1000kg with two pallets per
level, then beam capacity should be no less than 2000kg (1000*2).
Frame depth refers to the distance between loaded beams. Usually, a
properly stored pallet should overhang the beams by approximately
8cm both in the front and in the back, allowing the beams to carry
the full weight of the pallet. Thus, if pallet depth = 120cm, frame
depth = pallet depth - 2*8cm = 104cm.
There should be at least 45cm distance between ceiling (or your
sprinklers) and your products. Besides, the height that your
material handling equipment can reach should be taken into account.
Within your forklifts’ accessibility, we suggest that your rack
system should reach as high as it reasonably can to optimize the
utilization of vertical space, even if it exceeds your present
needs.
Since pallet racks are durable products, it is favorable to
consider further development in the future when designing pallet
racks. In addition, the difference in the costs between a 4m frame
and a 5m frame is negligible compared with the total cost of your
project.
