Pallet flow racking, also known as 'gravity flow', is a racking
system that is a good solution when a first-in-first-out (FIFO)
system is required. It is typically used in operations with high
stock turnover and where quick access to products is required.
They are mainly found in production environments where multiple
pallets of the same product are being produced. Others will use the
flow rack layer to process orders ready for dispatch or to store
product pallets multiple times in an order preparation system to
prepare large numbers of boxes. They are also useful for companies
with limited storage space or who wish to reduce operational costs.

With the pallet flow system, the pallets sit on a persistent wheel
track with the racks positioned at a downward tilt angle, allowing
the system to be gravity driven. The pallet is inserted at the
highest degree of inclination on the pallet flow and is pulled by
gravity to the other end of the rack where it is removed. This
design ensures that there is a pallet at the front of the rack
ready for pickup.
How Does Pallet Flow Racking System Work?
A pallet flow rack is designed with a slightly inclined track to
create a downward tilt. As the pallet is loaded onto the system, it
moves by gravity onto the rollers. The system is designed with
brakes to control the flow. In a well-designed system, the load
moves at a safe and controlled speed and when the load indicator at
the front moves forward the load starts to move to any position. In
the end, there is a stop ramp to ensure that the pallet is brought
to a controlled stop. When the pallet is removed, it creates a
space and the back of the pallet automatically rolls to its
position.
Depending on the size of the pallet, different types of rollers
will be used to ensure load flow, including full-width rollers,
polycarbonate wheels, magnum wheel rollers, and skate wheel
rollers. An automatic braking system is used to control the speed
of movement, ensuring that the pallet movement system is always
safe.
When deciding on the configuration of your flow pallet racking,
consider the following factors:
- The type of products to be stored. For example, are they boxes,
cartons, or something else?
- Type of pallet, wood, plastic, steel.
- The "footprint" of the load.
- The weight range of the load.
- The environment of the storage facility. For example, temperature
and humidity.
